Frequently Asked Questions

Food Hygiene
All our staff are trained in food hygiene and any allergies or intolerances are accommodated.
The handwashing area is accessible from the garden or the house, where children will find their own individually coloured flannel and a reminder of the nine handwashing steps.
In the kitchen, adults and children wear washable cotton aprons and help to lay the table and wash up afterwards*.
We provide seasonal snacks from the garden, but ask that the children bring a nut-free packed lunch.
*Hot water taps are isolated whilst we are in session and adults mix temperature-appropriate water for washing up.

How do you source your water at an off-grid setting and is it safe to drink? All our domestic water is rainwater, which is harvested into black barrels, then filtered twice, in UV and fine-particle filters and flushed through at least once daily. Our water has been tested against all national indicators, and we can confirm that it is completely free from any chemical treatments.

Why do you use a compost toilet and are they safe?Compost toilets are the most sustainable way to toilet. Human waste rots down into nutrient-rich fertile soil, as it produces essential nutrients of Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorous. Compost toilets save approximately 10 litres of water and heaps of chemical treatment on each use. Our compost toilet is emptied and cleaned out daily and the toilet seat and surrounding, including door handles sprayed with non-toxic anti-bac sprays twice daily. Thorough handwashing is a vital aspect of toilet and general hygiene and we emphasise this at all times at Little Brympton.
