Real tools need real PPE.
On arrival at Little Brympton, each child is shown their designated PPE basket, containing an individually coloured flannel for handwashing, garden gloves and a washable dust mask, for woodwork, clay work or chalking.
At the tinkering bench, children will find numbered ear defenders, eye goggles, high-vis jackets and hard hats and when working/playing in the field, take adult-sized wheelbarrows, sturdy tools and knee cushions.
As skills-based provision, it is vital that we promote self-care, body care, safe tool use and manual handling techniques from the outset. Our risk assessment contains notes on 'risk benefit' beside each identified risk, so that rather than closing down risky activities, we aim to support the children to master real-skills safely. Skills that can be extended to professional level in adulthood.
